A comminuted fracture of the proximal humerus neck. In other words, I broke my upper arm bone just below the ball that fits into the shoulder socket, and it broke into several pieces. There was some displacement of the humerus, but the displaced bone >mostly< went back into place due to gravity while my arm was positioned in the sling. There is still some impingement in my shoulder, but I have returned to swimming and can do most of what I could do before. It has been a slog, but I have a good physical therapist, a good massage therapist, and tai chi has helped a lot too. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_Avay-qP7qTfz2lXGWRUzBdI0_QV9iIC0DRkAmjkkLkfDIsoHq6AbgZm_CFa5aBxB4cU8w96BVz4ApA_1RHlYzNJyHIDdciiZ7anu1-nN_H8C_EGqPxDKljS1k3t2HiqWnS8AIJuStRwiDmpnUboQiMkcMaO8uetL63ZKRUvekAbioBSEsGXB_mbl7r6r/s4032/Comminuted%20%20fracture%20of%20proximal%20humerus%20neck%20only.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_Avay-qP7qTfz2lXGWRUzBdI0_QV9iIC0DRkAmjkkLkfDIsoHq6AbgZm_CFa5aBxB4cU8w96BVz4ApA_1RHlYzNJyHIDdciiZ7anu1-nN_H8C_EGqPxDKljS1k3t2HiqWnS8AIJuStRwiDmpnUboQiMkcMaO8uetL63ZKRUvekAbioBSEsGXB_mbl7r6r/w480-h640/Comminuted%20%20fracture%20of%20proximal%20humerus%20neck%20only.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAr_0kVj4oFfIcgkIj8OyGQbD69q5MMzhKQdsNmne8C9yN1l15er8gOfot_dqw8G49Q9ROO8KOa5I7F3Yy3HYWlQgECMdhCRWyIt9YEQ1F4Kcgc5nlCH-xEwzTPXQcoUlYZz4Uh2-UjKCWSjyHSCStovnXFBYBeorQKBWlF7QVcK27uqtxjaNu-hYt3xOM/s4032/Dad%202023%20(2).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhAr_0kVj4oFfIcgkIj8OyGQbD69q5MMzhKQdsNmne8C9yN1l15er8gOfot_dqw8G49Q9ROO8KOa5I7F3Yy3HYWlQgECMdhCRWyIt9YEQ1F4Kcgc5nlCH-xEwzTPXQcoUlYZz4Uh2-UjKCWSjyHSCStovnXFBYBeorQKBWlF7QVcK27uqtxjaNu-hYt3xOM/w480-h640/Dad%202023%20(2).JPG" width="480" /></a></div></div><br /><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc0IhLNfh8b3WxlofHYyMjSMEXP25rMG7PxSRVP6JarKCpvp2HBkqcywOoYjsFsTjJ3V59Cg1qc22Wk8vyjNNesLz_cj5NSlERJY4lajzAx5kMY_YVBbb5Q-fxCT73HWc_luAMz_uKGLnUGHeg7BkWMOhLxdGslkRD8nYVgPgrhOf7dRba_jbBN9HfT3xQ/s694/Dec%2026.PNG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="682" data-original-width="694" height="628" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc0IhLNfh8b3WxlofHYyMjSMEXP25rMG7PxSRVP6JarKCpvp2HBkqcywOoYjsFsTjJ3V59Cg1qc22Wk8vyjNNesLz_cj5NSlERJY4lajzAx5kMY_YVBbb5Q-fxCT73HWc_luAMz_uKGLnUGHeg7BkWMOhLxdGslkRD8nYVgPgrhOf7dRba_jbBN9HfT3xQ/w640-h628/Dec%2026.PNG" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">December 26, 2022</span><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB5cIt8aisdD-uzHd8e0LyU6XNl3wL40jrLBqVvygE-GwNCyPfgc_D4LKiZDQJGmyympwgfkepKAaEk4Ek53cT9s21hGtxMFCOWPdLvZtNX79_XAeh7uxckSNr31YcgV7QI8XzFyAMSanLiT95A1HMHKx-DKjw-iIu6m8YSE8qBVsYJJmdF2jriyR56kOL/s1024/April%2016.PNG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="879" data-original-width="1024" height="550" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiB5cIt8aisdD-uzHd8e0LyU6XNl3wL40jrLBqVvygE-GwNCyPfgc_D4LKiZDQJGmyympwgfkepKAaEk4Ek53cT9s21hGtxMFCOWPdLvZtNX79_XAeh7uxckSNr31YcgV7QI8XzFyAMSanLiT95A1HMHKx-DKjw-iIu6m8YSE8qBVsYJJmdF2jriyR56kOL/w640-h550/April%2016.PNG" width="640" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">April 16, 2023</span></td></tr></tbody></table><br />Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-50701543902959011222023-07-02T18:07:00.004-04:002023-08-08T15:32:10.058-04:00Dehydrator for the garden<p>I've had it a year now. I dehydrated a lot of herbs, peppers, and tomatoes from my garden last summer. This <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-food-dehydrator/">dehydrator</a> was well work the investment. I still have several jars this size of basil, tomatoes, and parsley in June 2023. I'm scaling back some of my tomato plantings this year, but I intend to restock the oregano and parsley, my most used cooking spices. <br /> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmoQGq-cRUMcHIcADMwQIQfwfheuXQMtzisbYYSjUOCEO2BucdWxt5jT1KhXkbasUubjsOp0guP0BqXAsZTFFWb_mC4Sxab14hU33JwYoWW6lbHjyH7wyNJOOUNCVvS7RlO_MQegcCicjodV4rUkcuyhnSRzf7ynY92WK5NY8Ll1pjq2v7FbMUvvTjKb-o/s4032/dehydrated.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmoQGq-cRUMcHIcADMwQIQfwfheuXQMtzisbYYSjUOCEO2BucdWxt5jT1KhXkbasUubjsOp0guP0BqXAsZTFFWb_mC4Sxab14hU33JwYoWW6lbHjyH7wyNJOOUNCVvS7RlO_MQegcCicjodV4rUkcuyhnSRzf7ynY92WK5NY8Ll1pjq2v7FbMUvvTjKb-o/w480-h640/dehydrated.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><br /><p></p>Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-56218035454793639972023-07-02T17:55:00.006-04:002023-08-08T15:42:03.939-04:00Berries in my yard<div style="text-align: left;"></div><p style="text-align: left;">I have three elderberry shrubs, although only one is producing copious amounts of berries. This one sits by itself in my side yard. The other two in my backyard are just growing tall and spindly with lots of blossoms - and very little fruit. I plan to remove one of these two in my backyard and plant another variety of elderberry in its place. I didn't know this, but cross-pollination among varieties increases fruit production. The variety in my side yard must either self-pollinate efficiently or is benefiting from the presence of my two backyard varieties. <br /><br />The aronia berries are very tart but when cooked down with a sweetener make a very rich blueberry-like syrup. I have three aronia berry bushes and all are producing abundantly even though the bushes are still small, only a few feet high. <br /><br />My currant bush produced a pint of fruit, but I wasn't in town to enjoy them. The shrub is still small and next year should see the first sizeable harvest. <br /><br />Gooseberries, aronia berries, and currant are my more dependable producers. Elderberry and cherry less so. Both of my dwarf tart cherry trees had lots of blossoms this summer but not an iota of fruit, which may have been due to the hard freeze in late spring when the blossoms had already started. I'm still waiting on the dwarf mulberry to produce flowers or fruit two years in. It died back to the ground this year.<br /><br />The larger of my two hazelnut shrubs has several small fruits on it. It's hard to say if they will turn into a nut. <br /><br />My blackberry is making more berries in my shady side yard where it grows untended than it did when I was carefully pruning and watering it in my garden. <br /></p><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-left: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs_JjLE1BZ3XeYx0ctkhRbC7wx4KkxjHum3IqLatNgRiGQuuy1SIhSwmGBhhCjBvM_9pFGr-4BnMiF8jQtIDuiN2lDJ2xs7u8_iBJKHZQhl7uFYNBuUdKxELWbCaDL-cy8kizmBeAY0OONVuH3L8UUHdPQBIOC-HNwfeOFBnJROSsdtf4FhUbVH2kTDMo9/s4032/elderberry.JPG" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="661" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhs_JjLE1BZ3XeYx0ctkhRbC7wx4KkxjHum3IqLatNgRiGQuuy1SIhSwmGBhhCjBvM_9pFGr-4BnMiF8jQtIDuiN2lDJ2xs7u8_iBJKHZQhl7uFYNBuUdKxELWbCaDL-cy8kizmBeAY0OONVuH3L8UUHdPQBIOC-HNwfeOFBnJROSsdtf4FhUbVH2kTDMo9/w496-h661/elderberry.JPG" width="496" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Elderberries<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikYiw7fNbT6wFRi0Gl4XOW3Retk2enYydRvxslIjX3lOp2_CQOkNHGbUJw1RQEgjwYa49dXxzaIgj9EznXY7ueaXhwu2cDZ4I69tiVubivxs7dJC6zFrxiIhCZBv5si7Xa5wnYpG6VAFKkoo5oYtQonFP22mCtzdmCRSidWE7StYy7a1GYSekwWJm8OBWN/s2632/Aronia%20berries.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2408" data-original-width="2632" height="455" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikYiw7fNbT6wFRi0Gl4XOW3Retk2enYydRvxslIjX3lOp2_CQOkNHGbUJw1RQEgjwYa49dXxzaIgj9EznXY7ueaXhwu2cDZ4I69tiVubivxs7dJC6zFrxiIhCZBv5si7Xa5wnYpG6VAFKkoo5oYtQonFP22mCtzdmCRSidWE7StYy7a1GYSekwWJm8OBWN/w497-h455/Aronia%20berries.JPG" title="Aronia berries, also known as chokecherry" width="497" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Aronia berry, or chokecherry<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><br />Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-31432311487557833982023-05-07T13:02:00.004-04:002023-07-02T18:08:45.420-04:00How my zucchetta is changing<p>I am in my third generation of seeds for zucchetta, or tromboncino. I've been letting some of the fruits remain on the vine and grow large rather than eating them all when they are young and tender. I store the winter zucchetta in my basement and eat them over the entire winter and this year, well into the spring. I typically have ten or so plants that climb along a narrow strip of soil that runs along my back fence. This third generation of seeds produced a deeper orange flesh and a better taste. It is closer in flavor to a butternut or winter squash than a yellow squash or zucchini. I've also been selecting for size and taking the last of the individuals to select for storage. As of May of 2023, I still have several large winter squash like the one in the photo below. The long seed-free neck is easily cut into medallions for roasting.<br /><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzLO2r9rTxYPvIX4tqWnBVPkl08es3fnXp3OIqn__8FoWvV1EzY58TjFtfYBL0XGoyl1emQBZLTT7XtATCO8C4X3XRewWTTJoj4ABz_ugZ0EEooj3hTeNhrZh5M8OVDp5CPDuibLCA6ivlJEi_JW1ZsNhIdL9SQfIbUXzLUb7fCfO_e_KEXn10F8kqBw/s4032/Zuchetta%20(3).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="576" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzLO2r9rTxYPvIX4tqWnBVPkl08es3fnXp3OIqn__8FoWvV1EzY58TjFtfYBL0XGoyl1emQBZLTT7XtATCO8C4X3XRewWTTJoj4ABz_ugZ0EEooj3hTeNhrZh5M8OVDp5CPDuibLCA6ivlJEi_JW1ZsNhIdL9SQfIbUXzLUb7fCfO_e_KEXn10F8kqBw/w432-h576/Zuchetta%20(3).JPG" width="432" /></a><br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwi_-TWHrubaZwqFgyTV7eUkLzVqRSv7DTLikXZIHI8_mdqVH0dRJ_aFcdV2deyCmMx2Px3iZzwD67o0nEQiuvgQVExFxh0RlzyVdfbSzN2bnLuIZf3amJnh2ylM9lm7cR66nfBPkubzPhUeM7esxuPy--o4ZSQTbHss75UmQ3kcBNw0d1WvZQmRWDvA/s4032/Zuchetta%20(1).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="587" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwi_-TWHrubaZwqFgyTV7eUkLzVqRSv7DTLikXZIHI8_mdqVH0dRJ_aFcdV2deyCmMx2Px3iZzwD67o0nEQiuvgQVExFxh0RlzyVdfbSzN2bnLuIZf3amJnh2ylM9lm7cR66nfBPkubzPhUeM7esxuPy--o4ZSQTbHss75UmQ3kcBNw0d1WvZQmRWDvA/w440-h587/Zuchetta%20(1).JPG" width="440" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS0l4HXecK8jkbPKKzitLiE0-VUNWlcjAbK9SFAnAFXGUB9AuLxWtrgWBUhRbO7AF4jTqh5rSrBVIDKUxeZ3cJrSCbu0J4PtFxr4AcM8-9xP3nf9k-kaoQbiWnnC8wTJjoqvLuf0ii7MqcB9PPG4vHbIRy1uIeCnb6SZ31dDplV7SPvwrxI-o_IvefaA/s4032/Zuchetta%20(2).JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="583" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS0l4HXecK8jkbPKKzitLiE0-VUNWlcjAbK9SFAnAFXGUB9AuLxWtrgWBUhRbO7AF4jTqh5rSrBVIDKUxeZ3cJrSCbu0J4PtFxr4AcM8-9xP3nf9k-kaoQbiWnnC8wTJjoqvLuf0ii7MqcB9PPG4vHbIRy1uIeCnb6SZ31dDplV7SPvwrxI-o_IvefaA/w437-h583/Zuchetta%20(2).JPG" width="437" /></a></div><br /><br /><br />Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-49697609921812935672023-05-07T12:34:00.008-04:002023-05-07T13:07:48.951-04:00Extracurricular reading from 2022? 2023?<p> I may have missed listing of few of the books I've read over the past year and half or more. There's barely enough time to read, so adding them to my blog is not a priority. This was my third reading of <b><a href="https://jacobin.com/2022/02/moby-dick-herman-melville-socialism-literature">Moby Dick</a>. </b>The novel is not what you think it is. They may be doing so well as to require some rigorous monitoring and pruning to keep them from overtaking my yard. Sorry kids, when you inherit the house, the first thing you will have to deal with will be all the feral elderberry. I harvested some of the flowers to make elderflower tea, but I'd rather wait to see what I can do with the berries. They won't be ready until the end of the summer. I have four elderberry bushes, but how many berries I get will depend upon how dutiful the birds are at foraging. I dug out my blackberry this year because the birds would get to them before I could. However, my blackberry were not producing very well because the very sunny location I planted them required more watering than I was willing to do. I wasn't interested in a making such a resource intensive berry. The elderberry so far seems much more prolific, although the preparation of the berries to remove the arsenic compounds may make it more work than picking and eating a blackberry.<br /><br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgci5_5wWdx4OfnGhbFiktICd0W5BvCmmQtoymxGVBsGOaSbgpYPfTbhoKlF9yJcgfhQeVydkjDzeOkvfn-yZGYzUx8Z6LiX6BF3WyE3tZ5WUqKQGyQkUdlSPXY_6ismZ5jrQSxZOB14vjqNDuNQh6f3PdWSAj2xwUSU0dGkY1L6Pk-_A1NuSqhUihwWQ/s4032/IMG_4160.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgci5_5wWdx4OfnGhbFiktICd0W5BvCmmQtoymxGVBsGOaSbgpYPfTbhoKlF9yJcgfhQeVydkjDzeOkvfn-yZGYzUx8Z6LiX6BF3WyE3tZ5WUqKQGyQkUdlSPXY_6ismZ5jrQSxZOB14vjqNDuNQh6f3PdWSAj2xwUSU0dGkY1L6Pk-_A1NuSqhUihwWQ/w480-h640/IMG_4160.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgayC3BHMJm6-hFjy09sSO3DzJfrVvmXbqU5kn5RjEWsIpp4C23NkZaNmT3mBqkSdetMKSjUysC_QCjY09gAIVqLmyHLN4hU1HTkUZcnlDPLmvBLfTkjUaX6zMffT7-E2kBvJ2Tx4Q_U7IMaib4IHsHbcfzmQTPP3-JOyQ3IzPDuBIWIYERQIQ8SMmSJg/s4032/IMG_4158.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgayC3BHMJm6-hFjy09sSO3DzJfrVvmXbqU5kn5RjEWsIpp4C23NkZaNmT3mBqkSdetMKSjUysC_QCjY09gAIVqLmyHLN4hU1HTkUZcnlDPLmvBLfTkjUaX6zMffT7-E2kBvJ2Tx4Q_U7IMaib4IHsHbcfzmQTPP3-JOyQ3IzPDuBIWIYERQIQ8SMmSJg/w480-h640/IMG_4158.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhalm_zRe57CSzX6ZtwmlFJydYz8E8H1lCMYpW0rtZcC2gHh3YnpIsrBt8bR4PlhjB8j8zO9XQtw0q0RlW_voypwPjieh8HmWI9XC3ud9FlbLtIyYmy82g-B4lBzPgNBXAjr-MtPUEvSZsi9bpIKBeDBY8ghjjKaceE9badhm5mx11OYIAYWSBc6TI5OA/s4032/IMG_4162.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhalm_zRe57CSzX6ZtwmlFJydYz8E8H1lCMYpW0rtZcC2gHh3YnpIsrBt8bR4PlhjB8j8zO9XQtw0q0RlW_voypwPjieh8HmWI9XC3ud9FlbLtIyYmy82g-B4lBzPgNBXAjr-MtPUEvSZsi9bpIKBeDBY8ghjjKaceE9badhm5mx11OYIAYWSBc6TI5OA/w480-h640/IMG_4162.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br />Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-81990592541362800862022-07-07T15:54:00.003-04:002022-07-07T15:54:37.318-04:00First harvest of garlic and kale basil lemon pesto<p>The Kentucky soils again made me feel like I know how to garden. My first garlic crop worked much to my surprise. I didn't harvest too soon or too late. We roasted some of the fresh garlic and I set the rest up in front of a fan downstairs to cure for a couple of weeks. I have about three dozen bulbs to store. And a week or so after the garlic harvest, my basil plants needed a first clipping to keep them from going to seed. My kale was doing well despite the heat, and from these confluences arose the return of summer pesto. That's a bus tray piled with my garden's contributions in the photo below, the first of 2022. Actually, the twins have been eating my kale basil lemon pesto all year, as I still had enough frozen from last summer to last through this past June. To the basil and kale, I add raw pumpkin seeds, olive oil, and just a little bit of parmesan - easy on the cheese so that it is more vegetable than dairy product. <br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; It makes
an edible fruit that has long been eaten by native Americans and rural populations in the southerneastern US. In Louisiana it is sometimes referred to as
pomegranate vine. It has a vine growth form that is known for being
weedy, and some consider <i>Passiflora incarnata</i> invasive. I've had to pull runners up all summer to keep it from growing over my
other plants. I'll know next year if I have a source of fruit juice and
leaf cover to cool my porch, or if I have a weedy monster I can't
control. It does die back completely in the fall though. It does not leave behind a woody vine that persists through the winter. The fruits just needs to be scooped out, squeezed or pressed
against the sides of water-filled pitcher to extract the juice, then chill. <br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--TmJzGr12Bg/YTOrocLR7xI/AAAAAAABWjg/LL6w6vns6_AIyNTKuvY-cLovs9J0v8veACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3565.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--TmJzGr12Bg/YTOrocLR7xI/AAAAAAABWjg/LL6w6vns6_AIyNTKuvY-cLovs9J0v8veACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/IMG_3565.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6g83cSvDk20/YTOrosQy9UI/AAAAAAABWjk/cKpsS5gzx6gz4kDyWI0WQ9AQWKaANFLywCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3561.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6g83cSvDk20/YTOrosQy9UI/AAAAAAABWjk/cKpsS5gzx6gz4kDyWI0WQ9AQWKaANFLywCLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/IMG_3561.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br />Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-75218770750350993772021-09-03T16:42:00.007-04:002021-09-04T13:02:35.756-04:00Harvesting my molokhia<p>Also known as Lebanese spinach, Egyptian spinach, Palestinian spinach, If I get a lot of seed pods I may make refrigerator pickles out of them. Below is a closeup of some of the leaves. And at the bottom are the plants in my garden. They are well over six feet tall. I had minor beetle damage on the top leaves mid summer, but they grew well and needed very little care or watering. I'll probably grow it again as I have been using the leaves all summer on pizza, sandwiches, and wraps. Photos of the cooked version coming soon.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-46UE3OK8z9E/YTKIH7ZbJJI/AAAAAAABWiY/-_vvhIEDbGUlTd9TOXrsHuUDyCk0OvIpwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3540.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-46UE3OK8z9E/YTKIH7ZbJJI/AAAAAAABWiY/-_vvhIEDbGUlTd9TOXrsHuUDyCk0OvIpwCLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/IMG_3540.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Az0-g1NnwuU/YTOmlq3HYOI/AAAAAAABWjY/-HVvcUiHzQgu7-ZnKWGhB1xvLc4GZ3f6QCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3566.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Az0-g1NnwuU/YTOmlq3HYOI/AAAAAAABWjY/-HVvcUiHzQgu7-ZnKWGhB1xvLc4GZ3f6QCLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/IMG_3566.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-34227584943544618392021-09-03T16:29:00.008-04:002021-09-04T13:25:34.489-04:00White asparagus long beans<p> I grew another crop of asparagus beans this summer. Asparagus beans originated in Asia and are increasingly grown in the US. They looks like snap beans but are actually more related to southern cowpeas. They are also pest resistant and in my garden much easier to grow than some of the more common Kentucky bean varieties. The photo at the bottom is my storage freezer. It is filled with tomatoes and lots of bags of asparagus beans - I can make Lebanese green beans for dinner all winter. <br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iuSddOTH1LY/YTOr5KDprEI/AAAAAAABWjs/m3xSrFR4A9cVSxnOO-8LXmDSwH8F1ElAACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3568.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iuSddOTH1LY/YTOr5KDprEI/AAAAAAABWjs/m3xSrFR4A9cVSxnOO-8LXmDSwH8F1ElAACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/IMG_3568.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RxRS6HqS_qI/YTKFZvyPesI/AAAAAAABWh0/dnPv9n1Fh6gTYnQqdB54G-uJZC33sBiAQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3539.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RxRS6HqS_qI/YTKFZvyPesI/AAAAAAABWh0/dnPv9n1Fh6gTYnQqdB54G-uJZC33sBiAQCLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/IMG_3539.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AswwoZku1sM/YTKFnAmHJPI/AAAAAAABWiA/k2L9aXkcqO4W4mBBVSYRE5J6Yvgn0rMsQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_3537.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AswwoZku1sM/YTKFnAmHJPI/AAAAAAABWiA/k2L9aXkcqO4W4mBBVSYRE5J6Yvgn0rMsQCLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/IMG_3537.JPG" width="480" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-30464669295701221932021-06-25T14:16:00.002-04:002021-06-25T14:16:58.425-04:00On pragmatism and problem solving<div class="gs_citr" tabindex="0"><div class="gs_citr" tabindex="0"></div><div class="gs_citr" tabindex="0">Savransky, M. I did a better job pruning them this spring too. I'm picking them as soon as they show a little blush of red. These are North Star cherries, a sour cherry. Sweet cherries do not do well here in Kentucky. My small tree, more a bush right now, produced enough cherries for a cobbler or pie. However, I ate them in smoothies and in oatmeal. Next year, a cobbler. You can pit them quickly with a metal straw, it was not much work at all. I planted the cherry trees a couple of years ago. This spring I planted elderberry, aronia berry, American hazelnut, a currant shrub, and a Chicago fig. Chicago figs are a cold-hardy variety unlike the figs I used to pick in Athens, GA and Charleston, SC. I am also trying two new vegetables this growing season. I have a new variety of asparagus bean in the ground, and I also have Egyptian spinach. Egyptian spinach seedlings are shown in the lowermost photo. There are several varieties of this spinach and some debate as to its origins as a food. From what I have learned I am growing a Lebanese variety, which is more in line with the common name used to advertise this plant at <a href="https://trueloveseeds.com/products/palestinian-molokhia">Truelove Seeds</a>. They call it Palestinian spinach, but it can go by many names depending upon the region. It is prepared as a very green stew or soup to accompany rice or meat. Just in front of all the spinach seedlings is a staghorn sumac. I'm not sure this little volunteer is going to make it, but I have a couple of now large plants (my height) that should flower and fruit this year. I'll use the berries to make my own sumac spice and sumac-ade to drink. <br /><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fY9DVexnrOk/YL_O6A5Kb8I/AAAAAAABV44/fwBbc8kgcysW9QvXOU5nZlDVA_5PECS3ACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/cherrytree.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fY9DVexnrOk/YL_O6A5Kb8I/AAAAAAABV44/fwBbc8kgcysW9QvXOU5nZlDVA_5PECS3ACLcBGAsYHQ/w480-h640/cherrytree.JPG" width="480" /></a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uh06dQWN7v0/YL_O56J3vLI/AAAAAAABV40/wTFHT9ydPuInT1X0Hxf8CREEon0zQBqogCLcBGAsYHQ/s1280/cherries.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1280" data-original-width="720" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uh06dQWN7v0/YL_O56J3vLI/AAAAAAABV40/wTFHT9ydPuInT1X0Hxf8CREEon0zQBqogCLcBGAsYHQ/w360-h640/cherries.JPG" width="360" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QrUgj6vyy1Q/YL_QqPUbRnI/AAAAAAABV5M/IN0V8WNnKGYFiO3DXiFPfqHUCrzJq87ygCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/spinach.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="683" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QrUgj6vyy1Q/YL_QqPUbRnI/AAAAAAABV5M/IN0V8WNnKGYFiO3DXiFPfqHUCrzJq87ygCLcBGAsYHQ/w512-h683/spinach.JPG" width="512" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-4107888054492943572021-03-06T16:16:00.010-05:002021-03-06T16:21:23.723-05:00New journal<p></p>I will be a co-editor of this new journal from the Environment and Planning series as Sage Publishers. To do this we first consider the different ways in which science can be practiced and how this shapes our understanding of causality as it relates to staking broad environmental policy positions. We then examine the history of scientific ideas about ecological organization in order to better understand how they have informed policy over time. What does it mean today when we say an ecological system is ‘resilient’, ‘complex’ or that an environmental problem is ‘wicked’? How does the way in which biodiversity is conceptualized matter for the policies that aim to protect and conserve it? A deeper understanding of policies that invoke sustainability is not just about having scientific knowledge about the environment and the organisms in it. Nor is it just a matter of having a specific kind of beliefs and politics. It is also about learning how humans think, make choices, and respond to problems that span individual and societal impacts. Through ideas in anthropology, economics, psychology, geography, ecology and biology, students in this course will acquire a more sophisticated understanding of how humans conceptualize, comprehend, and manage their impacts through environmental policies. <br /><br /><b>COURSE TOPICS<br /></b><br />1. The world viewed through sense, mind and context: where science and policy begin<br /><br /><i>How we sense and measure the world shapes science and how we attribute causality. Yet science itself is not one but many different kinds of knowledge practices tht all occur within a social context. In this unit, we explore the underpinnings of how science is done in order to understand the ways in which it relates to environmental and sustainability policies.</i><br /><br />Introduction<br />Philosophy and science<br />Scale <br />Sampling<br /><br /><br />2. Order, disorder, and complexity: science and policy as co-evolutionary dynamic<br /><br /><i>In this unit, we explore the nature of ecological change, and how our shifting understanding of it is central to making environmental policy and comprehending goals like sustainability. Change can be gradual and reversible as well as sudden and irreversible. Change is inherent to the world, thus policies that aim for sustainability must make educated guesses as to the trajectories of change that are probable, possible, and unforeseen.</i><br /><br />Ecological order and disorder<br />Complex systems<br />Resilience theory<br />Adaptive management<br /><br /><br />3. Understanding prediction and human behavior for environmental policy<br /><br /><i>In this unit, we examine how we make assumptions about the future, an inherent facet of policy. To do this often requires working with incomplete information. Thus we are required to anticipate the future through models and modeling. Yet another aspect of policy must also be considered, that of human decision making and the ways in which we think and reason through situations that involve tradeoffs between the individual and society. </i><br /><br />Game theory <br />Models and modeling<br />Climate change science and policy<br /><br /><br />4. Rethinking biodiversity and policy<br /><br /><i>Biodiversity policy is made upon a shifting understanding of what biodiversity is and how it works. In this unit we cultivate an understanding of the uncertainties and subjectivities of biodiversity, and how they have become enmeshed in current policies and practices.</i><br /><br />Constraints on biodiversity conservation<br />Reframing the idea of biodiversity<br />Revisiting biodiversity narratives about megafauna conservation<br />Island and mosaic approaches to biodiversity policy<br /><br /><br /><br />5. A good versus a bad Anthropocene<br /><i><br />In this unit we explore the tension between environmentalist versus ecomodernist policies that aim to address a growing number of wicked problems. Technological fixes, data-driven problem solving, market processes, and financial instruments are increasingly invoked in policy debates as to whether humans can have a good versus a bad Anthropocene. <br /></i><br />Environmentalism versus ecomodernism<br />Algorithmic Earth<br />Financializing nature<br />Geoengineering <br /><br /> <br /></p>Tony Stallinshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18040071941902090774noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-317692442285242245.post-64469578892155864082020-12-28T10:59:00.002-05:002020-12-28T11:20:17.505-05:00Still catching up on movies<p>Streaming multi-season programming continued its enticements this year, with the number of movies I watched declining again. I finished the Sopranos, with time out for the latest season for Better Call Saul. I find myself much more likely to stop a movie shortly after it begins if it doesn't pull me in, and the list of films started but stopped is probably as long as the one below. These are the ones that stuck. <br /><br /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 115%; margin-bottom: 10pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; text-autospace: none;"><span lang="EN" style="mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-ascii-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-hansi-font-family: Calibri;"><a href="https://www.mrqe.com/movie_reviews/ida-m100107303">Ida</a><br />

My students in GEO 261 Global Dynamics of Health were required to keep Covid blogs to fulfill UK Core standards. Each week students provided details about their lives with Covid. They were also asked to respond to weekly prompts presented and discussed in their Friday recitation meetings. Are US college students at a competitive disadvantage because of the disruptions caused by Covid? What happens if one country 'wins' the vaccine race? How should vaccines be distributed? What are the ways in which Covid is global as well as local? How have memes been used to convey the politics of Covid? These are some of the topics the students reflected upon with this activity. However, it was their individual entries that captured the way in which this global pandemic was not only one shared experience, but many different ones. I was surprised by how many of the students had or were exposed to Covid. And of course, there are student lives not represented here because their economic precarity kept them too busy to make regular contributions to their blog or they were just unable to go to school this semester. Those are the stories that need telling as well. These student blogs below, as well as the best entries from each of the 200+ students in my class, were uploaded into the UK Library's archiving program <a href="https://form.jotform.com/201004347258043">In This Together</a>. My colleague in the Department of Geography, Nari Senanayake, is teaching GEO 261 in Spring 2021 and plans to continue this archiving initiative. Thanks to my TAs this fall, Aleks Craine and Michael McCanless for helping with this project. (I wonder how long it will be before I will have to take this post down because someone will decide that the content in this blog does not follow the formal or informal politics of information disclosure.)<br /></p><table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="width: 474px;"><colgroup><col style="mso-width-alt: 16839; mso-width-source: userset; width: 355pt;" width="474"></col>
